About
Thomas Bayrle (b. 1937, Berlin) and lives and works in Frankfurt. His work was influenced by his experience as a textile weaver, publisher and graphic designer in Frankfurt, before he turned to art in the 1960s. He taught at the Städelschule in Frankfurt from 1975 to 2002. At Kassel in Germany, he took part in documenta 3 (1964), documenta 6 (1977) and documenta 13 (2012) when he won the Arnold-Bode-Preis, for his presentationin the Documenta-Halle. He has also shown at the 8th Busan Biennale (2012), the 6th and 8th Gwangju Biennale (2006, 2010), the 50th and 53rd Venice Biennale (2003, 2009), the 16th Biennale of Sydney (2008), the Tbilisi Triennial (2007), the 4th Berlin Biennale (2006) and the 2nd Guangzhou Triennial (2005). He has held major solo exhibitions at Pinacoteca Agnelli, Turin (2023); the New Museum, New York (2018); MAK (Museum für angewandte Kunst / Gegenwartskunst), Vienna (2017); Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami (2016); Lenbachhaus, Munich (2016); Institut d’art contemporain, Villeurbanne / Rhône-Alpes, France (2014); WIELS, Brussels (2013); MADRE (Museo d’Arte Contemporanea Donna Regina), Naples (2013); Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, United Kingdom (2013); MABA (Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, 2009); Musée d’art Moderne et Contemporain, Geneva (2009); Museum Ludwig, Cologne (2008); Museum für Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt (2006). Bayrle has received numerous awards and marks of recognition, including the Cologne Art Prize (2000) and the Prix Arts Electronica, Linz (1995).
